CALLING ALL OUT-OF-WORK ACTORS
One-Man Show Workshop
Out-of-work actors are a Hollywood cliche. Now a stranger is riding into town, offering hope. Could writing a one-person show lead to your own happy ending?
Abie Philbin Bowman is the writer and performer of the most successful Irish one-man comedy show of the decade.
His debut, ‘Jesus: The Guantanamo Years’, took the world-famous Edinburgh Fringe by storm, sold out across Ireland, and toured London’s West End, the USA and Pakistan.
The show has been reported by over 70 media outlets including Reuters, the New York Times, The Financial Times and AP.
‘Jesus: The Guantanamo Years’ is now travelling to the inaugural Hollywood Fringe Festival, alongside two more recent shows by Bowman, ‘Eco-Friendly Jihad’ and ‘Sex, Lies & the KKK’.
Between them, the three shows will rack up 12 performances in 11 days. in his spare time, Bowman will be conducting workshops on writing and touring a one-person show.
“All creative artists – actors, musicians, comedians – have two different jobs. The first is producing work of value and integrity. The second is convincing people to appreciate it. Like it or not, that involves marketing.”
Bowman believes that the world is “full of talentless artists – like Britney Spears and Lady Gaga – who make millions simply because they have great marketing people.”
He insists that the goal of this course is to “teach marketing to artists and comedians with integrity.” Bowman believes there are key advantages to writing a one-person show.
“It puts you in charge. Instead of relying on casting directors to give you work, you can contact venues and festivals yourself with something to offer."
The costs of touring solo are fairly low and, as Bowman points out, "your job can’t be outsourced to China.” But it’s not all good news. He admits that "the cast parties are pretty disappointing”.
