Many people will never forget where they were, the night Barack Obama was elected President. Comedian Abie Philbin Bowman certainly won’t… He was interviewing the Ku Klux Klan, live on radio.

Bowman was hosting the election coverage on a small, Irish radio station. “We had one researcher, no budget and we were competing with CNN, MSNBC and Fox”.

Following a moving interview with a Civil Rights veteran, Bowman began wondering about the people who had opposed desegregation.

“I realised that the Ku Klux Klan had been fighting racial integration for over 100 years. So the election of President Obama was the most comprehensive defeat in the Klan’s history. I wondered how they were taking it.”

The son of a historian, Bowman felt obliged to record the KKK’s reaction. “I hate Nazism. But I wish someone had interviewed Hitler, as the Allied tanks rolled into Berlin.”

The Irishman contacted the KKK via their website. “Alongside all the racial material, there was a disclaimer. ‘The Ku Klux Klan is NOT a dating organisation’…”

The comedian was curious. “How many people make that mistake?”

During the interview, broadcast live on Irish radio, Bowman challenged the Klan’s views on mixed-race marriage, and their claim to be a Christian organisation.

At one point, he asked: “If Jesus’s mother was a Palestinian Jew, and his Father was God, doesn’t that make Jesus mixed-race?”

The heated discussion which followed is available on YouTube. Bowman will be telling his side of the story to audiences at Asylum Lab.
