From the Director, paperStrangers Artistic Director Michael Burke
The play Medea was first performed in 431 B.C. and remains one of the most controversial pieces of literature today. Though we do care about Medea and Jason by the end of Euripides’ play, what we really want to know is what kind of woman this is who could choose such a course of revenge. What is in her head? What is in her heart? Is she a sadistic monster, or a victim of her own flawed humanity? These questions drive the creation of this adaptation. The basic action remains faithful to Euripides, but interspersed throughout are glimpses into the mentality of Medea, how she sees her own reality, revealing her innermost thoughts, struggles, and motivations as “reality” unfolds. This adaptation is genuinely one-of-a-kind, taking the audience directly under Medea’s skin, into her flesh, blood, love and fury.
