WHERE DO THEATER and MUSIC FADE to BLUES?
The Hollywood Fringe Festival kicks off with three short plays and live music that capture themes from ‘the Blues’
LOS ANGELES, June 6, 2010 — When is it good to ‘feel Blue?’ When doing so involves a night of live theater. As part of the first-ever Hollywood Fringe Festival, three award-winning short plays will be performed, followed by the soulful music of blues singer/songwriter, Laura Duncan.
The plays, ‘Property,’ ‘A Gravedigger’s Tale,’ and ‘The Thread Men,’ all explore damaged people who struggle to exorcize their demons and come to terms with their conscience. Or learn to ignore it.
The shows will be at 8pm on June 17, 18, 25, and 26, at The Woman’s Club Of Hollywood. Tickets are $10 and available at www.ovationtix.com/trs/pr/737655.
“I think a central concept of Blues Music is that by listening to it, you actually transcend your own sadness. The music pulls it out of you and leaves you feeling joy,” said playwright, Thomas C. Dunn. “We hope to achieve a similar effect on our audience.”
‘Property,’ written by Thomas C. Dunn, is a drama about two mothers who meet in the property room of a prison and help each other make peace with their son’s violent pasts. It is a world premiere.
‘A Gravedigger’s Tale,’ written by Mark Borkowski, is a haunting black comedy about a gravedigger whose addictions threaten to overwhelm him. It was published by Smith and Kraus as a best short play of 2009.
‘The Thread Men,’ written by Thomas C. Dunn, is a thriller about a psychiatrist who becomes trapped in an elevator with a bizarre-acting man and discovers his decisions may have life-or-death consequences. It was published by Samuel French as a best short play of 2008.
After a brief intermission, the stage will open up to the music of talented English artist, Laura Duncan, and her blues/rock band.
“The Blues has always been about desire,” said singer, Laura Duncan. “Desire to overcome the damage in one’s life, to lament injustice, to somehow find a path back to happiness. These plays all explore similar themes, which is why I felt my songs would really complement the performances. It’s just going to be an exciting show!”
