THE HOLLYWOOD FRINGE FESTIVAL
HOLLYWOOD FRINGE FESTIVAL
Featuring new and experimental work by hundreds of artists
PREMIERES JUNE 17-27, 2010
“(Hollywood Fringe) envisions a model in which Los Angeles theatre succeeds without having to be a feeding ground for New York.” -Steve Julian, LAStageBlog
“Hollywood… might prove to be the Eliza Doolittle of an American theatrical renaissance” -LATheaterReview.com
“Fringe festivals, wherever they are in the world, are important to local, national, and international communities for different reasons. Venue staff will meet producers, producers will search for artists, artists will attract audiences, and audiences will get to know their neighborhood better, which in turn will benefit local businesses. If there is a Fringe Festival in your community, everyone is a winner!”- Holly Payton, Founder of the World Festival Network
“I’m excited that Hollywood has been selected as the site of Southern California’s Fringe
Festival, which will bring artists from around the world to share their works in this creative
environment” -L.A. City Council President Eric Garcetti

About the Hollywood Fringe Festival
June 17th-27th 2010, Hollywood Fringe launches a Fringe Festival for Southern California: An eleven-day invasion uniting hundreds of performers and producers of over 175 exhibitions of dance, theater, comedy, cabaret, music, visual art, circus, and other entertainment. Over 30 venues, including a number of Hollywood’s premiere theaters and clubs as well as unorthodox spaces like parks and churches, will play host throughout the festival. In the spirit of most Fringes, participation is open and uncensored, and tickets range from free to $30. Buy tickets to over 800 performances now at www.hollywoodfringe.org or by calling 866-811-4111. Many productions offer fellow participants, seniors, students and/or veterans a discounted rate.
The Hollywood Fringe team has adopted a model similar to Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the first event of this type. In this model, any artist can join if they find a venue and pay the registration fee. This model allows artists and venues to seek out compatible relationships and make decisions about a myriad of production questions (such as ticket price, show length, and artist payment) independent of a centralized Fringe organization. The company feels that a system wherein any artist can join promotes entrepreneurship in the arts and helps the festival grow organically, while at the same time fostering community and creativity.
The company has spent the last three years establishing partnerships with arts companies, community organizations, and other local businesses in the Hollywood area to host and participate in the festival. As a result, the neighborhood is abuzz with talk about the inaugural Fringe, which seems to be a welcome addition to Hollywood. In fact, the abundance of enthusiastic artists and venues in the area have caused the nonprofit organization to strongly gain momentum since the opening of project registrations last November, which can be completed online. The festival’s website, www.hollywoodfringe.org, is a place where artists can develop project ideas, secure Fringe venues, register for the Festival, advertise, and sell tickets.
Fringe Central will serve as a hub during the festival (June 17-27), hosting Opening and Closing Night Parties as well as an awards ceremony June 27. Tickets will be available at the Fringe Central Box Office (Theater of Arts Arena Stage @ 1625 N. Las Palmas), as well as online; tickets for specific projects will be available for purchase at the project’s venue before the show. Also available at Fringe Central are the official 2010 Fringe Guides, which feature short summaries of Fringe events, detailed ticket and showtime information, and a map to get you from one show to another. You can view or download the full guide here. Online, you can buy tickets to any Fringe show by browsing all the Fringe projects, or alternately searching by day or venue .
About Fringe Festivals
Fringe Festivals exist throughout the world as havens for underground and emerging arts scenes. The first Fringe Festival opened in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1947; an antithesis to the bigger, nationalized, and very exclusive Edinburgh International Festival. The Edinburgh Fringe Festival has since grown into the largest arts festival in the world with hundreds of artists, thousands of performances, and millions of patrons every summer. It annually grosses over $100 million for the local economy. Fringe Festivals have since sprung up in dozens of cities across Europe and North America.
Most Fringe festivals are “unjuried” and “open” preferring lotteries, first-come-first-served, and find-your-own venue systems to a formal selection process. This open means of programming fosters the work of both the well-established and the obscure; everyone has the opportunity to participate. Fringe festivals nourish young visionaries by providing networking opportunities and production experience. They also provide large economic and cultural boosts for their hosting communities.
Hollywood Fringe’s Mission Statement

- Champion underground art and artists
- Vitalize the arts industry in Los Angeles
