In a Fight With the Bullies, You Want This Woman on Your Side.
Therese Diekhans (member AEA) as Mother Mary Harris Jones in The Most Dangerous Woman in America: Machine Guns, Coal Dust and the Making of the American Dream is not to be missed. L. Nicole Cabe had this to say of the show: “Most Dangerous Woman in America” starring Therese Diekhans will grab your imagination, run with it through some incredible injustice, and shake it ‘til you feel like a warrior. So you should go see it…”
Joe Adcock says: “If you could use a hit of solidarity with progressives of the past, along with a sense of the common purpose shared by contemporary strugglers, see this show”.
The show draws upon the words of and about America’s great woman labor agitator, Mary Harris Jones. Admired by friend and foe alike, Mother Jones was a constant thorn in the sides of the barons of the Industrial Age, while inspiring workers to stand up for their rights.
The story is told through the eyes of Maria Baumgartner, a young girl who accompanies Mother Jones to a meeting where the venerable labor organizer/ hell-raiser speaks to striking coal mine workers in West Virginia. As she speaks, other characters come to life to tell their stories. All the characters are portrayed by Ms. Diekhans and include Louis Tikas, a Greek miner and martyr of the Ludlow Massacre of 1913; Dennis McKee, a breaker room boy; John D. Rockefeller, Jr.; and Reese Blizzard, the district attorney in West Virginia who famously spoke the words, “Your Honor, there sits the most dangerous woman in America”.
Recent events in West Virginia prove that coal mining is still a dangerous job, and mine owners still make millions from unsafe mines. Now, more than ever, Americans could use a hit of Mother Jones speaking truth to the rich and the powerful.
