Award-Winning Play

Plays Hollywood Fringe

Waiting for Callas to Sing, a play by Homer Barrera, was awarded First Prize in the Nosotros New Playwright Competition of 1997. In the Nosotros production, the role of Lucy was created by Lupe Ontiveros (Desperate Housewives, As Good As It Gets, Selena, Zoot Suit). The present production is dedicated to the memory of the late great pioneering actress, who died in 2012, leaving a deeply saddened community of admirers.

Lucy, the protagonist of the play, writes poetry. Her hero is Victor Mature, “the greatest of all Samsons.” Her idol is Maria Callas, who has sung the role of Dalilah in the opera by Saint-Saens, Sanson et Dalilah. Lucy’s poetry expresses love and sensuality; it condemns deception and injustice. Lucy wonders, Hard work — is that all there is to the American dream?

Waiting for Callas to Sing will be performed at 9:00 p.m. on two consecutive Saturday nights: June 22 and June 29. Tickets are $12.00. For tickets, go to www.hollywoodfringe.org/projects/1386, or call (323) 455-4585 (additional fee applies to phone purchases). Tickets, if available, will also be sold at the door immediately prior to each performance.

Waiting for Callas to Sing plays in the heart of Theatre Row at Studio C Artists, an air-conditioned black box space with a delightful character of its own. Located at 6448 Santa Monica Boulevard, the first-floor venue is wheelchair accessible.

Waiting for Callas to Sing is one of over 100 projects at Hollywood Fringe Festival 2013, which runs June 13 through June 30. The Festival features cabaret & variety; comedy; dance & physical theatre; ensemble theatre; musicals & operas; and solo performances, all of which are gripping, sexy, provocative, hilarious, fearless, and/or inspiring! It’s a veritable cornucopia of entertainment. Feast theatrically at Hollywood Fringe 2013!
