MUSIC AND A CLASSIC TALE COLLIDE IN WORLD PREMIERE PIECE

Star-Cross'd

LOS ANGELES, California (May 28, 2014) – Have you ever, could you ever, or WILL you ever love someone that much? That’s the very question that directors Lizzy Ferdinandi and Jessica Gaupel, co-founders of Half Shadow Players’, ask with the world premier of Star-Cross’d.
To some, Romeo & Juliet is a story of two teenagers blinded by lust and driven to do unspeakable things in order to be together. And we all know how that ends. At its heart, Romeo & Juliet is a love story that transcends age and time.
Star Cross’d is a 50-minute movement-orientated retelling of Shakespeare’s classic love story, Romeo & Juliet, which marries haunting contemporary music with the classic text for a raw, visually stunning spin on the classic tale.
“Our hope is that the lack of text will be a pleasant surprise. You still get your balcony scene, but it’s the balcony scene like you’ve never seen a balcony scene before,” says co-director Jessica Gaupel.
The Half-Shadow Players is a new theatre company formed by Lizzy Ferdinandi and Jessica Gaupel. The Players’ inaugural production was a movement piece entitled, “The Raven,” based off Edgar Allen Poe’s story of the same name. Director Lizzy Ferdinandi conceived and directed the piece with the undergraduate Theatre Arts students at CSULB.

Ferdinandi’s work on “The Raven” has been described as “so transformational, you have to experience it to believe it” (Stage Happenings) and “Visually Stunning and musically Challenging” (Press Telegram).

It is the hope of The Half-Shadow Players to bring diverse, edgy, and authentic new works to the Southern California stage. With “Star-Cross’d,” the Half-Shadow Players work primarily in movement and dance to cast new light on classical texts.
“Star-Cross’d” is playing at the Flight Space at the Complex Theatre as part of the 2014 Hollywood Fringe Festival. Preview performance is Saturday, June 7 at 8:15PM, with the remaining performances on Thursday June 12 @ 8:30PM; Saturday June 14 @ 9PM; Saturday June 21 @5:45PM; Friday June 27 @ 7PM; and June 29 @ 4:15PM.
