LOS ANGELES, CA, MAY 25, – Based on conversations with real women who shoplift, “Sticky Fingers” is a one-hour, monologue-driven, ensemble dramedy that weaves emotional, funny and (mostly) true stories with interesting facts and statistical tidbits about shoplifting into a performance piece that playwright Terry Anne Holzman says is “part 12-step meeting, part shoplifting seminar, and entirely entertaining.”

“In this age of soul-baring recovery programs, admitting to an act of shoplifting seems to be one of society’s last taboos and because it is, most shoplifters are ashamed to talk about their crimes," says Holzman. “There’s a saying in recovery: ‘we are as sick as our secrets’ so telling someone your truth must be the first step to healing.”

“Sticky Fingers” opens with an unnamed SECURITY GUARD, a woman who has seen it all but conceals a secret of her own. She acts as guide and moral conscience as the women tell their personal stories:

TIFFANY steals makeup from Sephora. EVE dreams of having a new iPhone. BEVERLY compulsively steals gifts for her family. ROBIN, a “freegan”, is sick and tired of eating and wearing what no one else wants. JANE thinks “free food just tastes better". DEIDRE fondly recalls her one and only shoplifting experience. And, of course, there’s the most famous shoplifter of our time — WINONA — who walks out of Saks Fifth Avenue with $5,560 worth of merchandise.

Holzman was inspired by verbatim/documentary plays like “Vagina Monolgues”, “Love, Loss and What I Wore”, “The Exonerated”, and the work of Anna Deavere Smith. For “Sticky Fingers”, Holzman extensively researched the world of shoplifting and discovered that most people are unaware that shoplifters, especially women, often do not steal out of need or greed, but because of deeper psychological reasons they might not be unaware of or are unable to acknowledge.”

Directed by Ernie Holzman the cast includes Sidney Aptaker, Francine Daniels, Maya Ferrara, Breon Gorman, Dionne Jones, Fiona Lakeland, and Hallie Mayer.

“Sticky Fingers” will be performed in the Dorie Theater at the COMPLEX, 6476 Santa Monica Blvd. Hollywood 90038.
Running time: 60 minutes. All performances $12.
