How to Be A Virgin (in 12 morally ambiguous steps)

Everything you think you know about virgins is wrong. Carla Neuss’ play is a #SeeItLA* and reminds everyone that a person doesn’t have to sleep with someone to feel loved, make bad decisions, and have a little fun. Cleverly titled, and written, this production starts with a slideshow presentation of the steps to be a virgin which gets tossed that aside and we are taught the steps through the morally ambiguous “lovers” the Virgin has. How to Be a Virgin’s dialogue is written in such a way that the actors don’t have to feed the audience jokes. You have to admire the playwright for being willing to even write this story and, if it does nothing else, it will give you pause to consider why you’ve made your choices. So much of art, especially within the art community (because, let's face it, we care most about what our peers think, no?), has a great deal to do with speaking the unsaid and showing the unseen. The more an artist dares to do this, it seems the more praise he/she receives. Unless it is about an unpopular subject matter. Surely a better illustration of irony there cannot exist. This is why I enjoyed this show. Carla hid little in this exploration of oneself within a culture and world completely contrary to the self. This show takes a subject that often at its best is boring, and at its worst is alienating and makes it universally acceptable to examine, enjoy, and often cringe. It allowed all of us, no matter our sexual histories, to be with her on this journey.Katelyn's work as the virgin is engaging and at times alarming. She so thoroughly connects with the audience, that we couldn't help but be there with her as she explored the nebulous boundaries of her virginity. It has a universal truth strung through a very personal narrative, and all audience members, no matter their background, can walk away with a lot of laughs, and some new insights. ... full review
