What I liked
I loved the writing, and the way the direction moved and flowed with the dialogue, which was constantly overlapping between the dual narratives. It kept the simple story very engaging and exciting, with all 4 actors are clearly invested in this passion project. Just the kind of talent I’ve come to expect from my alma mater (Fight on, Trojans!) :)
What I didn't like
The only criticism I would have is that some of the moments felt a little repetitive, and I felt the actors could have explored a little bit more to find more interesting ways to play certain beats. That’s a really minor thing, though, and something that I think will come naturally to all of these very talented peeps with experience.
My overall impression
“This Our Now” is a sweet, complex drama about modern relationships that really showcases the talents of a passionate group of young actors. I was shocked to learn that actress Olivia Cordell is also the show’s playwright, as the script has the maturity and an awareness of a seasoned vet. Aubrey Rinehart’s inventive direction also shines in this piece, with movement that perfectly matches Cordell’s flowy, overlapping dialogue. I think these two are a dynamic duo who really have the talent to make a big splash on the LA theatre scene in the years to come.
