What I liked

“Dystopia” takes a simple suggestion and turns it into a whole YA dystopian story, complete with love against all odds, intriguing villains, and a sense of foreboding. I love that it’s an all-female cast presenting a cast of characters that comments on a modern genre exemplified by movies like “The Hunger Games” and “Divergent.” There’s a delightful tongue-in-cheek jab at the concept that young adults fight a police state that rejects them for being outliers.

What I didn't like

I found the introduction slightly jarring. I think I was hoping for something a little more serious and gritty, given the name and the group’s reference to Ripley from “Alien.”

I also liked the element of music and sound effects, but the specific loops could be disjointed or misplaced at times. Otherwise, everything was great!

My overall impression

“Dystopia” was a delightful exploration of the YA Dystopia genre exemplified by movies like “The Hunger Games” and “Divergent.” The all-female cast does an incredible job of filling all the roles and creating vivid and recognizable characters in a world in which Love must triumph against an oppressive police state. Fans of improv will love the commitment and complexity of the world and scenes being created. Fans of theatre will appreciate the refreshing surprise of seeing an entirely original and unique piece created in front of them with the same integrity as a scripted production. Go see it while you can!
