This piece is smart and compelling and haunting. While it's important to talk about sexual violence and trafficking, it's difficult to tackle artistically - As an artist who is also doing a show that tackles sexual violence im super picky about how people approach it...if you're too on the nose and show and tell everything it feels like an exhausting regurgitation of something sad that people don't want to hear about- this is where Christina's piece nails it- she shares a story of trafficking in an innovative and clever way- its right to the point-- , but with some metaphor mixed in, we are able to step out of Judging the situation (as folks tend to do) and just see the way this "toy" is being used. Dark, moving, haunting. Told through interpretive movement, Christina captures the emotion behind the journey of a young girl who is bought, used, and discarded for someone else's pleasure. The visuals and sounds all work together to create a world that draws us in and makes us feel. Toys may be short (runtime is barely 18 min), but it packs a powerful punch.
