What I liked

The acting in “Closer” was excellent and the director did a terrific job of staging it in a small space. It’s a challenging piece for an audience (and for a theatre company) but it definitely has rewards. The first act flies by with a wonderful momentum of discovery with each scene. And the choices acting-wise and directing-wise are spot on.

What I didn't like

Just that the second act is too long — but this is not a reflection of the acting or the directing, but rather a reflection of the playwright, Patrick Marber. He goes on about 4 scenes too long – even though a couple of those scenes are very good, the talkiness of the piece has worn out its welcome by then. As they say in Yiddish, “Genug already with these 4 neurotics and their endless geshreying!”

My overall impression

Extremely high quality, challenging work for a “Fringe Festival.”
