Reasons to Be Pretty

What is it that you value most, and why? Neil LaBute’s “Reasons to Be Pretty” is a character-driven piece that uses everyday language to expose our deepest insecurities. Four characters explore the meaning of the word “pretty” and how it can seem to mean both everything and nothing all at the same time.

Steph can’t get past the fact that the love of her life, Greg, doesn’t objectively find her to be the most beautiful woman in his life, but Greg can’t seem to find the right words to convince Steph that her looks are not what matters to him. Meanwhile, Carly, Steph’s bombshell best friend, grows increasingly suspicious that her husband Kent is cheating on her. Kent, Greg’s smooth-talking, shallow friend, spends his time obsessing over, and collecting beautiful women.

The value that society places on beauty seems to fall away once relationships are examined under a microscope. But can we ever truly let that go?

RTBP reminds you that it’s not easy to say what you mean and mean what you say…or even know what you mean to begin with….
