The playwright makes Argos the dog our narrative center, a stroke of genius.Carolina Montenegro matches this with genius of her own — an astonishing tour de force of the actor’s art, while in a muppet-like costume and rooted to one spot. Joe DeSotot deftly uses his clown training to hook us to Telemachus and keep us there through all his growing pains. And Austin Kottkamp frames it all on an apparently artless set that is simply eloquent.
What I didn't like
Ha! Good luck to that.
A much longer run, more productions, selection by CTG …
My overall impression
A TERRIFIC, WITTYTURN ON A CLASSIC.
This is a remarkable work, perhaps even a great one. Denney has cut away 95% of Homer’s “Odyssey,” giving it a single focus and turning the testosterone epic into a feminist text, centered in heart and hearth. This quiet, domestic odyssey never leaves home — no battlefields, no corridors of power — yet its echoes for our imperial age are fierce (and often funny; we wince as we laugh).
