What I liked

The range of acting was breathtaking. The visuals were striking. The use of the stage kept everthing moving clearly and swiftly. The choice of using the area behind the stage was especially emotionally devastating. Mariela is an engaging presence: the hopeful innocence she brings to the younger Sela as well as the fierceness of the new mother determined to end legacies of violence and shame grab you!

What I didn't like

Honestly, the entire performance was gripping, evocative, emotional and engaging. Sure, the crew missed a cue or two but it was a preview. Otherwise, again, just wow.

My overall impression

This show is why solo performance exists. Not only does Mariela span decades in her acting, bringing to life the innocent, yet knowing hopes of a 14 year old girl, who has a passion for life and art as well as crusty old school, teachers, stif-necked pastors, serpentine 16 year old boys, on the prowl, and her own self, in the midst of childbirth (!) but she does it all within one hour. She also brings to life the cloistered world of her Caribbean upbringing, where there was no sex education, no guidance, ancient prejudices, and constrictive mores. The beauty of the show is how this cheeky, isolated girl triumphs, despite all the pressures against her. It’s funny, heartening, and will move you to tears as well as laughter. Just wow.
