LET’S BE HONEST is a one-woman show by Nikita T. Hamilton, a TV writer and comedian, set in a world where an unknown phenomenon has taken away everyone’s ability to hide their real feelings resulting in mass panic (due to mass honesty). Women begin to reveal truths that they rarely talk about, or even allow themselves to think about, exposing emotions and feelings that we as a society try to keep buried. Inspired by one-woman shows by greats like Whoopi Goldberg and Lily Tomlin, and based loosely on some of Nikita’s own experiences, the candor of the show’s characters tell us not only Nikita’s story, but also the realisms of black women in the United States. The show is a mix of character monologues and videos that culminate in Nikita, the “smart, funny black girl,” realizing that she hasn’t always been completely honest with herself about how her marginalization and upbringing have affected how she operates in the world and thinks about herself.
