BLACK WOMEN DATING WHITE MEN

lauren gorski · June 26, 2020 certified reviewer
An excellent, engaging play that weaves in the real interviews of Black women in long-term relationships with white men into a Zoom hang out with friends. The play allows for the audience to feel like a voyeur into a close knit group, and the format of Vimeo is a great tool to ensure video quality and encourage you to grab a glass of wine as you join. Great writing, acting, directing/editing, this is one that I'm looking forward to seeing how this is adapted back to stage. ... full review

A fun show that feels like you are watching a sitcom. Good energy. I think it could have a little more diversity in terms of the different aspirations of the women. ... full review

Buffy Kills Edward: A Musical Romp

I liked the energy and music. The show is self-aware of it's fan fiction roots and doesn't shy away from it. As a Buffy fan, I liked the Buffy/Dawn song the most because it was a good balance of commentary on the show and saying something new rather than some other moments that felt like rehashing of familiar territory. The fight scenes were exciting, for the size of the space! ... full review

This is a great, simple story about a time and place in history not many people think about. I loved the format of the narrator and how she interacted with both the audience and the story. ... full review

Hot Dates

This is a fun, energetic show about the complexities of sex, identity, and happiness so much more. This was my first solo show, and I was impressed by how much I connected with the performer's story. She runs around the room, changing costume, jumping around timelines, and yet in the end it all comes together in a cohesive, compelling narrative that also makes you appreciate how versatile a blow up doll can be. ... full review

So You Want to be a Vampire

A total camp fest, and in a good way! You could tell that the actors were having fun and the energy was magnetic. I liked how simple the concept was. Overall, a fun performance, but still missing some stronger character work that makes vampire lore so unique to other genres. The parents and the friend felt underdeveloped compared to the comedy gold of the minion tribe. ... full review

THANKSGIVING

Such a strong, poignant piece. It's more than a comedy--as the story of this kind of dysfunctional family actually has a lot of heart and the courage to say things we need to say more often to each other. ... full review

Did I just go to a therapy session? This is such a creative idea--and this show executes it well! Great integration of audience interaction, with smart, simple tech. I went to the "America's First" show and without a doubt the grand finale is a must see! Don't miss out on this experience. ... full review
